GERMANY AWARDS €108 MILLION TO ZAMBIA FOR DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVES

The German government has officially pledged €108 million (approximately K3.14 billion) to support Zambia's development agenda over the next two years. This funding includes €26 million (K758 million) previously designated for drought relief and resilience-building efforts, following successful negotiations between the two governments.

Leading the Zambian delegation was Secretary to the Treasury in the Ministry of Finance and National Planning, Felix Nkulukusa. The German side was represented by Ambassador Dr. Anne Wagner-Mitchell and Dr. Frank Hofmann, Head of Division for Southern Africa at the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The discussions aimed to align Germany’s development cooperation with Zambia’s 8th National Development Plan priorities.

According to a statement from the German Embassy in Lusaka, the €108 million commitment will focus on several key areas, including good governance, access to clean water, and food security through sustainable agriculture practices. Additionally, efforts will be made to diversify Zambia's energy sector and promote renewable energy initiatives.

This substantial financial support underscores Germany's long-standing partnership with Zambia, with total bilateral cooperation since 1964 exceeding €1.4 billion (K40 billion).

During the negotiations, Dr. Hofmann emphasized the importance of trust and collaboration in their partnership, stating, “We are committed to supporting Zambia in navigating current challenges while building a resilient and sustainable future for its people.”

In response to the ongoing drought crisis, Germany has allocated €26 million to aid Zambia's relief efforts, primarily through the World Food Programme (WFP). This funding will also support United Nations agencies like UNICEF and UNHCR to address nutrition deficiencies among vulnerable populations, including pregnant women and young children.

Mr. Nkulukusa expressed gratitude for the €108 million commitment, highlighting its potential to enhance governance, water sanitation, and food security. He noted that these initiatives directly address pressing challenges facing the nation, aligning with the aspirations of Zambia’s 8th National Development Plan for socio-economic transformation.

Both countries acknowledged the need for reinforced efforts in implementing policies and reforms crucial for sustainable development, ensuring no one is left behind. Germany commended Zambia’s ongoing reforms in public financial management, recognizing the nation’s progress in promoting transparency and accountability.

Ambassador Dr. Wagner-Mitchell praised Zambia's commitment to addressing structural impediments to inclusive development, stating, “The strive to implement necessary reforms is the foundation for our long and committed development cooperation.”

The successful conclusion of these bilateral talks marks a significant milestone in the 60-year history of cooperation between Germany and Zambia. Both nations reaffirm their dedication to tackling Zambia’s immediate challenges and advancing long-term development goals for a sustainable future.
