NUMBER OF REGISTERED BUS OPERATORS DECREASES DUE TO RISE IN COST OF DOING BUSINESS

The Bus and Taxi Drivers Association of Zambia has reported a significant decrease in the number of registered bus operators.
This is due to the increasing cost of doing business in the transport sector. Sydney Mbewe, the Association's National Secretary, identified road tax and insurance as some of the expenses making it challenging for most players, leading to bus crews losing their jobs.
Mr. Mbewe also mentioned that some bus owners have resorted to illegal operations as they are unable to make profits from operating legally, and he believes this should be discouraged by creating a more favorable environment.
He suggests that the government should consider providing incentives to the transport sector to help operators cope with the high cost of doing business.
