Police on the Copperbelt have detained Four Copperbelt University-CBU- students for allegedly stealing various food items from 18 shops following a riot last night.
According to Copperbelt Province Commissioner of police Peacewell Mweemba, students were last night incensed by lack of water supply on campus leading to a riot that resulted into damage to property and theft of food items such as chicken pieces and assorted groceries.
Mr. Mweemba says the students gained access to the shops by breaking locks and windows after which Gershom Nkole, 21, Chikwa Nyirongo, 18, Axiton Katambo, 20 who were found with chicken pieces and Johnson Nkonde, 19, who was found with a wooden chair, were picked up.
Meanwhile, Former Copperbelt University Student Union Academic Affairs Minister Shadrick Linenga has described this behavior by the students as criminal and unacceptable, urging the students responsible to refrain from such detrimental acts.
He has advised students to seek dialogue over their grievances as opposed to causing damage to property, looting and creating a problem on top of existing challenges.
