Mine Worker Unions are urging Vedanta Resources to use the remaining two weeks before government formally hands over Konkola Copper Mines-KCM-, to prepare promised incentives to the workers for immediate implementation.
National Union for Miners and Allied Workers-NUMAW- president Saul Simujika says the workers expect to get their K2500 one-off and the 20 percent salary increment by the end of July 2024.
Mr. Simujika says the unions are confident that the process will be complete by the end of June 2024 as promised by government, citing the success of the two creditors’ meetings that saw an overwhelming response to the scheme of arrangements.
He tells Phoenix News that having noted that the documents were already submitted to the courts of law and that the nine days given for their review have elapsed, June 30 is an achievable date to hand over KCM to Vedanta.
Mr. Simujika adds that so far, all the major hindrances have been addressed and that the workers are looking forward to the revitalization of the asset toward productivity.
