PROPOSAL FOR ZAMBIA TO RE-INTRODUCE ONE-UNION ONE-INDUSTRY POLICY

Opposition Patriotic Front Chama North Member of Parliament Yotam Mtayachalo has proposed that Zambia re-introduces a one-union one-industry policy to resolve challenges in the labor movement and protect the interests of the worker.

His proposal follows a near punch-up among the existing 8 mine-worker unions in Kitwe yesterday after 5 of the unions collectively disowned the other 3, accusing them of hypocrisy and questioning their integrity.
Mr. Mtayachalo has backed the three trade unions namely, the Mineworker’s Union of Zambia, the National Union of Miners and Allied Workers and the United Mineworkers of Zambia, saying that the actions of the other five unions have the potential to disrupt negotiation procedures and damage the labor movement.
He says the five unions that include the Miners & Allied Workers Union, Consolidated Miners and Allied Workers Union of Zambia, the Mine Contractors’ Factory and Allied Workers Union, the Mine Industry Union of Contracting Workers, and the Miners’ Technicians’ Artisans and Allied Workers Union of Zambia should unite with their colleagues.
Mr. Mtayachalo, a former trade unionist in the energy sector, has challenged unionized workers not to allow union leaders to use them to champion their personal agenda.
