The Millers’ Association of Zambia says the current high mealie-meal prices in eastern province fetching at K410 is artificial.
MAZ president Andrew Chintala explains that the price hike has come about because millers in the last two months did not get any clearance from the ministry of agriculture on stock movements of the commodity which created a vacuum in the market.
Mr Chintala in an interview with Phoenix News says mealie meal traders in the area with excess mealie meal took advantage of the scarcity of the commodity and hiked prices.
He says the association has since engaged government on the matter to provide the required regulation on the distribution of mealie meal in eastern province so that the commodity is readily available at a stabilized price.
