GWEMBE TOWN COUNCIL SECRETARY THREATENS TO DEMOLISH NEWLY CONSTRUCTED SUBSTANDARD BRIDGES

By Leah Ngoma

Gwembe Town Council Secretary Maliwa Muchuu has threatened to demolish newly constructed bridges that will fail to meet the minimum standards required for the construction of crossing points.

Speaking when he inspected the ongoing construction of 9 crossing points funded by the Rural Development Fund component under the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, Eng. Muchuu expressed disappointment that one contractor had used smaller steel bars during the ongoing construction of crossing points.

Eng Muchuu has since directed the named contractor to immediately replace the steel bars as failure to do so will compromise the lifespan of the bridge.

He said the desire of government is to construct infrastructure that will stand a test of time and improve people's lives.

Meanwhile, the contractors working on the bridges are optimistic that they will be able to complete the works on the nine bridges within the agreed period of time.

The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development last year released K5 million for the rehabilitation and construction of crossing points that were damaged due to heavy rains.
