COOKING OIL PRICES LIKELY TO REMAIN UNCHANGED DESPITE ZAMBIA RECORDING SOYA BEANS BUMPER HARVEST

The Crushers and Edible Oil Refiners’ Association-CEDORA- has predicted that cooking oil prices are likely to remain unchanged despite Zambia recording a soya beans bumper harvest in the last farming season.

CEDORA Director Aubrey Chibumba says this is because much of the cooking oil consumed in Zambia is imported and that only 20 percent is extracted from locally grown soya beans.

Dr. Chibumba has told Phoenix News that there is need for the country to double its crushing capacity from last year’s 400, 000 metric tons in order to be self-sufficient.

Meanwhile, Dr. Chibumba says Zambia should take advantage of the poor harvest of soya beans in Argentina as an opportunity to export soya cake.

He notes that South Africa is likely to export more of its soya beans to Argentina and will start looking to Zambia for importation of soya cake.
